Street sweeping and parking enforcement: reports ordered on restoring weekly sweeping and refunding wrong tickets Item 34

Trash and recyclingParking

The joint Public Works and Transportation committee report asks the Bureau of Street Services to report what staff, equipment and money it would take to bring back weekly street sweeping citywide, and asks the Department of Transportation to report what parking enforcement would need to go with it. The city attorney's office is asked to report on the state Vehicle Code changes needed to authorize automated enforcement technology on street sweeping vehicles. It also asks for reports on modernizing sweeping notifications, including options to provide $250,000 to maintain the current system and a separate amount to expand it (agenda), clearer and multilingual alerts, and text messages. The Transportation Department is to recommend a process for regularly reviewing sweeping citations and refunding drivers who were wrongly ticketed within 15 days, and to report the findings of its street sweeping audit. These are report-back instructions only. No service is restored yet, and no fiscal analysis was completed.

  • Heather Hutt (Councilmember, Tenth District) moved, seconded by Eunisses Hernandez (Councilmember, First District), to adopt the Transportation Committee report (voted together with items 67 and 72). Result: passed, 14 ayes.
