Earthquake preparedness report Item 24

Emergency preparedness

A verbal report requested by Kathryn Barger (Supervisor, Fifth District) on how ready the county is for a major earthquake. It came from the Office of Emergency Management, Public Works, Fire, the Sheriff, Countywide Communications, Health Services, and Caltech seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones. Presenters said a big quake would overwhelm first responders and disrupt power, water, communications, and roads across several counties. They described retrofit work and a new address-search Know Your Risk website (ready.lacounty.gov/earthquake), and urged households and neighborhoods to prepare. The Board received and filed the report, and Kathryn Barger (Supervisor, Fifth District) read in a motion for next week.

  • Receive and file the earthquake preparedness report. Result: passed.
