45-day citywide moratorium on data centers Item 29

Zoning and plansEnergy

A committee report and urgency ordinance putting a citywide interim zoning moratorium on data centers for 45 days. The Land Use and Transportation Committee heard it October 5 and recommended it as amended. State law required nine votes, and as an urgency ordinance it takes effect immediately once passed on first reading. While it lasts, city approvals of data centers are paused as the Board and the Planning Department study the effects on energy, water, air quality, land use and communities and write permanent rules. Planning must report back within 25 days, with a hearing within 35 days.

  • Pass the urgency ordinance on first reading, same house, same call. Result: passed, without objection.
